UPA WON TRUST VOTE : 275-256

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Tuesday won a vote of confidence in the Lok Sabha with a comfortable margin belying predictions of a close contest on a day marred by unseemly scenes over allegations of bribery. The prime minister's motion, asking the House express its confidence in the Council of Ministers, was carried thorough with 275 votes in favour and 256 against it.There were 10 abstentions as per the final tally. The results were announced after nearly an hour, after officials corrected the initial figures which showed 253 votes in favour of the motion 232 against and 2 abstentions in a total vote of 487. In the din caused by BJP members demanding prime minister's resignation and shouting down his speech, Singh laid his reply to the debate on the table of the House. As opposition members pressed for a division, Speaker Somnath Chatterjee ordered voting by electronic voting machine. Even before the final result was announced ruling alliance members went to the prime minister and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi to greet them on the victory in the confidence motion the first in over four years of this government. The prime minister had sought the confidence of the house after the Left parties, which provided outside support since May 2004, withdrew it on the issue of government operationalising the Indo-US civilian nuclear deal by approaching the IAEA. The two-day debate on the motion was often acrimonious but it took an entirely different turn after BJP members shocked the House by producing bundles of currency notes alleging bribes by the Samajwadi Party to them to abstain from voting. Four BJP members including former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee were permitted to vote from the inner lobby of the house through slips on account of their ill-health.

Girl Raped in Moving Car In Charkhi Dadri

A teenaged Dalit girl was allegedly raped inside a moving car in Charkhi Dadri, police said on Saturday. The 17-year-old girl, a Class X student, was bundled into the car by four youths in their early twenties outside her school on Thursday and then raped by one of them, they said. Later, they forced the victim out of the car near old bus stand and threatened her of dire consequences if she narrated the incident to anybody. Police, however, arrested three of the accused after the victim's father lodged a complaint in connection with the incident on Saturday.

'The Dark Knight' sets record

``The Dark Knight'' lit up cash registers during its midnight U.S. debut, stealing away with a record $18.5 million from 3,040 theaters, distributor Warner Bros. said Friday.
That bested the 2005 performance of ``Star Wars Episode III: The Revenge of the Sith,'' which took in $16.9 million during its midnight debut in 2,915 venues.
``The Dark Knight'' figure did not include any of its 3 a.m. or 6 a.m. showings.
And while Batman only strikes at night, all indications are that ``The Dark Knight'' will keep landing blows: Advance ticket sales were booming.
The early numbers mean ``The Dark Knight'' will likely join the ranks of 10 other films that debuted on non-holiday weekends and cleared more than $100 million from Friday to Sunday, said Paul Dergarabedian, president of tracking firm Media By Numbers LLC.
`There is an unbelievable demand for this movie,'' he said. ``The Heath Ledger factor is a major part of this. Beyond that, the movie is so good, it's worthy of all these accolades.''
The movie directed by Christopher Nolan and starring Christian Bale as Batman cost $185 million to make, excluding money spent marketing, said Dan Fellman, Warner's head of distribution.
Critics have heaped praise on the movie _ especially the late Heath Ledger's turn as the Joker, which has already generated whispers of a posthumous Oscar nomination.
``We're very proud of the film,'' Fellman said. ``It's the magic of the movie business, how one film just stands out above the others.''

Angelina(New mum) leaves hospital with twin babies

France, July 19: Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie has left the French hospital where she gave birth to twins last week, the hospital said on Saturday. "Mrs Angelina Jolie left the clinic Santa Maria of Foundation Lenval early in the morning, on July 19. The mother and her babies are doing very well," the Lenval hospital in the southern French city of Nice said in a statement on its website. Oscar winner Jolie, 33, gave birth to twins Vivienne Marcheline and Knox Leon last week, with actor Brad Pitt, the children's father, by her side. Jolie slipped out of the hospital unseen by the crowd of reporters, cameramen and photographers camped outside on the fashionable Promenade des Anglais waterfront drive in Nice since she gave birth last weekend. The precautions reflected the obsessive media interest in Jolie and Pitt, one of Hollywood's most glamorous couples, dubbed "Brangelina" by the celebrity press. The pair, who have rented a 17th century villa in Provence, reportedly sold picture rights for the babies to a US publication for USD11 million, which they will donate to charity. They have four other children -- Maddox, Pax, Zahara and Shiloh.

You are Sexy If your Voice is Sexy

When it comes to determining whether a person is sexy or not, most people rely upon their sight. Now, according to a new study, a person’s voice is more than enough to pass a judgment on their attractiveness. The study, led by Susan Hughes, an evolutionary psychologist from Albright College in Reading, Pennsylvania, suggests that people with voices deemed sexy and attractive tend to have greater body symmetry upon close inspection. "The sound of a person''s voice reveals a considerable amount of biological information," LiveScience quoted Hughes, as saying. "It can reflect the mate value of a person,” she added. The study cautions that an attractive voice does not necessarily indicate that this person has an attractive face. A symmetric body is genetically sound, scientists say, and in evolutionary terms, in the wild, it can be an important factor when selecting a mate. However, sometimes changes during prenatal development can slightly skew this balance. For instance, the length ratio between index and ring fingers, known as the digit ratio, is fixed by the first trimester, a time that corresponds with vocal cord and larynx development. If the hormone surge that affects vocal development also affects finger growth, there should be a connection between an individual''s voice and digit ratio. Hughes could not demonstrate a connection between voice attractiveness and digit ratio in her previous work, possibly due to vocal changes that occur during puberty. So in the new study, about 100 individuals listened to previously recorded voices and independently rated them on nine traits important during mate selection: approachability, dominance, healthiness, honesty, intelligence, likelihood to get dates, maturity, sexiness and warmth. Study participants generally agreed on what made a voice attractive. But when Hughes used a spectrogram to analyze these voice ratings according to different acoustic properties such as pitch, intensity, jitter and shimmer, she could not find a common feature that made these voices seem attractive. This indicates our perceptual system may be more advanced than expected, Hughes said. The study is published in the June 2008 edition of the Journal of Nonverbal Behavior.

Provided fake CVs: TCS fires 20 employees

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has allegedly fired twenty employees for providing fake certificates of previous employment by bogus companies.
It seems that TCS wants to set an example to fraudsters and they feel the best way to do this is to get stricter about the people they employ.
“Yes, the number is around 20, that's the number we have found at this point of time where there have been different kind of things that are not matching with what they have stated in their resume with what they actually have,” says HR Head, Ajoyendra Mukherjee.
He adds, “Maybe it's the experience, maybe it's the reference, maybe it's the certificates that they've given and we're taking very strict action against that.”
CNBC-TV18 learns that certificates from bogus companies are quite rampant. Not only are such fake certificates available for a meagre Rs 15,000 to Rs 20,000, these bogus companies even have people who answer calls and verify information during background checks.
IT companies are now focusing on a more thorough background screening, including field checks on companies that aren't in their database.

A meeting of Samajwadi Party MPs held here on Friday ahead of the crucial July 22 trust vote saw 16 of the 39 Lok Sabha members turning up. The meeting, addressed by party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav and General Secretary Amar Singh, has assumed importance as the SP has become a crucial ally of the Congress-led coalition at the Centre ahead of the confidence motion. While MPs Ateeq Ahmed and Afzal Ansari are in jail, Raj Babbar and Beni Prasad Verma have been suspended from the party. Munawwar Hasan is a known rebel, who has announced that he would vote against the motion. Same is the case with Rajnarain Budholiya, MP from Hamiripur, and Jai Prakash, who represents Mohanlalganj. Kirti Vardhan Singh, Mohan Singh and Revati Raman Singh, who had not attended the last Parliamentary Party meeting of SP, were present at the two days deliberation. Meanwhile, the party has issued a three-line whip asking its members to be present in the Lok Sabha on July 21 and 22 and vote in favour of the confidence motion.
