Singh is King
My elder bro who was on duty in counting told me that UPA is again in power. In India, the ruling Congress-led coalition has secured a decisive victory in general elections, paving the way for a stable coalition government headed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. With most votes counted, the Congress party led alliance had led in 260 seats, while the bloc led by the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party trailed with about 160 seats. The news that the Congress Party led coalition was racing to victory came within hours after vote counting began Saturday, surprising a country which had been bracing for a fractured verdict. Even before the final results were in, a smiling Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, thanked people for a "massive mandate." "It will be our effort to rise to the expectations of our people, to give them a government which is a caring government, which represents the best instincts of Indian polity, which works for sustained and equitable development, which protects the secular values," he said. The Congress Party will head a coalition government. The alliance it heads is slightly short of a clear majority in the 543-seat parliament, but it can easily pick up support from small parties and independent lawmakers to bridge the gap. This has set at rest fears that the country will have a weak, unstable coalition, dependent on a host of unreliable partners. In fact the Congress Party has emerged hugely strengthened, winning more seats than the most optimistic projections. It has picked up about 190 seats on its own - it's best performance in nearly two decades. The Congress Party dominated Indian politics since the country's independence, but saw is share of votes slip in recent elections. The president of the Congress Party, Sonia Gandhi, who is credited with reviving the party's fortunes, said people have made "the right choice." "People have appreciated the fact that we have worked hard, that we do think of them, that we work for them with sincerity and dedication," she said. Congress party supporters celebrated through the country, setting off firecrackers and dancing in the streets. The Congress Party attributed its showing in the polls to the work it has done for the rural poor, who make up the bulk of India's voters. Good news for the Congress Party was bad news for its main rival, the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party, which saw its share of seats slip compared to 2004. Few had expected the BJP to win, but the party had hoped to put up a good fight. "It is a disappointment, but like all good matches, one loses, one wins, we have lost, but with the hope we will come back again strongly," said Siddharth Nath, spokesman for the party.
The elections also dealt a blow to leftist, regional parties and caste-based parties, which fared poorly, ending their hopes of playing a dominant role at the national level. India's new parliament must be seated by June 2.

FOREX News -Yen, dlr fall as shares rise, sentiment improves
The yen fell to two-week lows against the dollar and the euro on Friday, while the dollar also fell versus both the euro and perceived higher-risk currencies as investors hope the worst may be over for the global economy. Risk appetite has been boosted by recent global economic data and a note of optimism from the U.S. Federal Reserve earlier this week. Currencies regarded as higher-risk such as the Australian dollar benefited strongly, and a rise in U.S. stock futures also helped sentiment with the S&P 500 futures SPc1 up 0.3 percent. Trading was thin and relatively volatile, however, with European markets closed due to the May Day holiday. "It's very quiet, with movements largely flow-driven, but there's still a slight bid to risk," RBC Capital Markets currency strategist Christian Lawrence said. "Currencies continue to be driven by equities and risk appetite and the riskier, commodity-based currencies have outperformed against the perceived safe-haven yen and dollar," he said. At 1011 GMT, the euro rose 1.2 percent against the yen to 131.86 yen, just shy of an earlier two-week high around 132.00 yen

Breast squeeze dialogue shocks the cnesor board
Imagine a scene in which the film’s hero is told to squeeze the heroine’s breasts! No wonder the Censor Board is in shock. Realistic filmmaker Manish Gupta, known for his hard-hitting films ‘Matrabhoomi’ and ‘The Stoneman Murders’, has gone a bit too far in depicting realism in his next film Hostel . As the title suggests, the film revolves around a bunch of students living in a hostel. There is a scene in the film where the characters played by Vatsal Seth and Tulip Joshi are ragged by their seniors. In this scene, one senior tells Vatsal to squeeze Tulip’s breasts. According to a tabloid, the senior’s dialogue goes something like this : “Iski chhati dabaa. Private mein to dabata hai. Ab bhi dabaa. Nahin toh hum dabayenge.” The Censor Board was so shocked by the dialogue that they refused to give even an ‘A’ certificate to the film. The director was straightaway told that such kind of dialogue would not be allowed in films. Gauzing the gravity of the board’s reaction, Manish Gupta has now decided to change the scene. Now, the seniors will force Vatsal to kiss Tulip. Despite the change, Manish maintains that such kind of vulgar ragging does take place in colleges.

Hrithik and wife Susanne Roshan are very much together
A reliable source from the sets of Kites says Hrithik and Susanne Roshan are very much together and the rumors of a split cannot and should not be believed. We spoke to our source from Kites sets, “There is no split between them. Both Hrithik and Susanne are very happy together. Susanne use to come on the sets and Barbara and Susanne got along very well too. They both talked all the time. Hrithik and Barbara are very good friends but that doesn’t mean that they are close with each other and are having an affair. Hrithik loves his family very much and he is not that kind of person who will let his family down.” Our source further adds, “Hrithik and Susanne are very hospitable people and they made sure Barbara felt comfortable during her first trip to India. Her English has a heavy Spanish accent and she obviously doesn’t know Hindi, so Hrithik also helped her communicate with other people. He was her translator on the sets.”
Another source adds, “Hrithik is absolutely devoted to his wife and family. He and Susanne had gone for a holiday to London and returned a couple of weeks ago after Kites shooting was wrapped up and so how can they split up suddenly? This is not true and from London he went to SA because he had to shoot for an ad. Hence he didn’t rush back to India, he returned when the shoot for the ad was completed.”

16 people killed in school shooting in Germany
A teenager in black combat gear went on a bloody rampage at his former school in Germany on Wednesday, slaying at least 15 people before dying in a shootout with police, officials said. Nine pupils, three teachers and three passers-by were among those killed in the shooting spree at the secondary school in Winnenden, said Heribert Rech, the interior minister of the southern state of Baden-Wuerttemberg. After armed commandos with helicopters and dogs launched a massive hunt for the 17-year-old gunman, he was killed in a fire-fight with police. German media reports said that he had shot himself dead in the car park of a nearby shopping centre after kidnapping a man and his Volkswagen Sharan car and drove through a police barrier towards the motorway. "The gunman just sprayed bullets all around him," N-TV cited an unnamed witness as saying. A local radio journalist told the same channel that the ex-pupil had used a machine gun during his rampage.

'Slumdog' kids get new homes?
Rubina Ali and Azharuddin Ismail, the two youths from Dharavi shanties who played roles of Jamal and Latika in Oscar-winning movie "Slumdog Millionaire" will get one flat each from government quota if Maharashtra Housing Area Development Authority (MHADA) has its way. Amarjeet Singh Manhas, Chairman of Mumbai Housing and Area Development Authority, a unit of MHADA, has written a letter to the housing authority's vice-president Gautam Chatterjee asking him to provide one flat each to both as they made India proud with their acting talent. "The acting talent of the two has made India proud. The children, who belong to underprivileged family, are special for us. They played equal role in getting the movie the Oscars. In a move to honour them, Amarjeet Singh has written a letter to MHADA officials to grant them houses," Krishna Hegde, a member of MHADA board told. Rubina and Azharuddin are now living in Garibnagar in suburban Bandra. "Mumbai Congress president Kripashankar Singh will also meet Chief Minister Ashok Chavan in the evening to discuss about providing flats to the children," Hegde added.

Karan Johar moved to tears by Billu
If there is something which is being hailed most about ‘Billu’, it is the penultimate 20 minutes of the film. A heartwarming emotional turn of events in the concluding reels of the film have been pointed out by one and all and the effective writing that made the scenes possible has been termed as the highlight of the film. No wonder, Mushtaq Sheikh, the co-writer of the film is happy that his good work has been noticed and appreciated. Another interesting factoid about ‘Billu’ is that after watching the film in a special screening, even Karan Johar commented that it moved him to tears. “‘Billu’ is not a slapstick comedy, instead it is a comedy of life”, says Mushtaq who has authored quite a few books on his close friend and super star Shah Rukh Khan, “Moreover, life is always a heartfelt tale. So yes, it is expected that that tear effect would be the same on audiences across the globe. I am in fact confident about it because if the warmth of the story touches you then nothing can go wrong with this movie.” Which means that instead of ‘Billu’ being termed as a comedy, it would rather be considered as a ‘let’s make you cry’ kind of emotional drama. “It’s not a comedy as in like a farce or spoof, but the situations and the mess we human beings create is often quite funny and sad and could make you laugh when you cry and cry when you laugh”, philosophizes Mushtaq Sheikh, “”Billu’ is a film with a golden heart’ - Now that’s my favorite phrase to describe ‘Billu’. For a movie like ‘Billu’ where Shah Rukh Khan and Irrfan Khan were there from the very beginning, was he required to write the film in a manner that would suit their images? “Actors such as Irrfan Khan and Shah Rukh today play characters as per the writer’s creation and the director’s vision. Sure they have their own interpretations and take on how to play the character but the writer does not need to tailor-make a character to suit the actor’s image. Those days are long gone”, asserts Mushtaq Sheikh.

Katrina Kaif not not for more
After having done numerous glamorous roles in her run up to success, Bollywood's reigning queen Katrina Kaif is now in a serious mode. The Namastey London star has taken on meatier roles, which will allow her to prove her mantle as a good actress. And to begin with Kats will be seen in a completely de glamourised role in Prakash Jha's Rajniti. Reports also suggest that Jha wants Katrina to sport a non-make up look for the major part of the film. Jha, who in the past has done wonders with his heroines including Madhuri Dixit, Bipasha Basu, is taking a keen interest in Katrina's characterisation. Reports suggest that Katrina has been advised to undergo voice modulation since she is required to speak in a certain dialect in the film's second half. The film, which is a contemporary take on Mahabharata, also stars Ranbir Kapoor, Ajay Devgan among others.

The most gorgeous actress of Bollywood is ready to shed her glamorous side for a serious role.Katrina Kaif is not content being eye-candy in films and is intent on doing roles that challenge her as an actress. After umpteen roles that had her playing the proverbial glam doll, Katrina is now set to be stripped of her oomph. The man who would do so is director Prakash Jha who wants to present Katrina as a simple, girl-next-door in his next semi-realistic political drama titled Rajniti . The buzz is that Jha wants Katrina to sport a non-make up look for the major part of the film. On top of it, Jha also wants Katrina to undergo training in voice modulation because she is supposed to deliver her dialogues in a different way in the film’s second half.

Priyadarshan:- 'Slumdog Millionaire' is mediocre, trashy
Director Priyadarshan has joined the bandwagon in slamming Danny Boyle's underdog saga 'Slumdog Millionaire' and has called the film a 'cheap trashy mediocre version' of erstwhile Bollywood hits. ' 'Slumdog Millionaire' is nothing but a cheap trashy mediocre version of those commercial films about estranged brothers and childhood sweethearts that Salim-Javed used to write so brilliantly in the 1970s. And please quote me clearly on this. If the Golden Globe and Oscars committees have chosen to honour this trashy film it just shows their ignorance of world cinema,' Priyadarshan told IANS. Priyadarshan, whose much-acclaimed film on the silk weavers of Kanjeevaram was shown alongside Boyle's film at the Toronto Film Festival last year, feels Indians are exercising prideful property rights over a film that denigrates Mumbai. 'I saw the film with a mixed audience at the Toronto Film Festival. The Westerners loved it. All the Indian hated it. The West loves to see us as a wasteland, filled with horror stories of exploitation and degradation. But is that all there's to our beautiful city of Mumbai?' He is surprised that Mumbai is celebrating a film that shows only the city's underbelly. 'Why are we taking this treatment? Just because a white man has made 'Slumdog Millionaire', we're so happy with it? I've read Vikas Swarup's novel 'Q&A'. It should have been made by Mani Ratnam. Then you'd have seen what he would have done with Mumbai.' The angry director wonders why there isn't a single shot in 'Slumdog...' that shows the more aesthetic side of Mumbai? 'Why has Danny Boyle not taken one shot of Marine Drive? Do his slumdwellers exist only within their slums? And look at the absurdities...A boy becomes a national hero on a game show. One cop takes him under arrest and interrogates him relentlessly. Where is everyone else? Is this kind of confinement possible in this day and age when television cameras enter your bedroom? If one of our filmmakers had made the same film we would have blasted him out of business.'

Why Shilpa shy
Despite rumours and reports to the contrary, actress Shilpa Shetty refuses to go bald for her role in the Indo Chinese film Desire. The film is currently being shot in Kerala.
In fact, currently the actress is shooting for her bald portions in the film. But she has managed to acquire the bald look with the help of prosthetics. Many years ago, actresses Shabana Azmi and Nandita Sen had shaven off their hair for a role in the aborted version of Deepa Mehta's Water. Lisa Ray who then went on to do act in the movie, is believed to have shed her hair for it. But not Shilpa, who feels that the very thought of going bald is scary. The actress also wanted to avoid continuity problems for her films. It takes a lot of guts and a total lack of vanity to be able to shed off one's tresses and go bald. Unfortunately, Shilpa was not willing to take this kind of plunge. One of the best prosthetic make up artistes worked on her look for the shoot which is taking place at Kollam. After this schedule, the unit will move to another location before the final schedule at Kuala Lumpur. Shilpa is busy learning Odissi from Ratikant Mohapatra as she portrays an accomplished dancer of repute in n this part of the movie.

Ghajini collection in trouble
A petition by the producer of the Tamil version of Ghajini, calling for the collection details of the Hindi Ghajini came up for hearing at the High Court on 6th January. It may be recalled that producer Salem Chandrasekar filed a petition seeking a stay on the film, as he had the rights of the film with him. The local court issued a stay order on the release of Ghajini but this was conditionally vacated by the High Court of Madras on appeal after the defendant deposited Rs. 5 crores.Hearing the petition, the Division Bench comprising Justice Dhanapalan and Sathyanarayana called the defendants, Geetha Arts to submit the collection report. The defendants pleaded that the film is being screened in several parts of the country and hence it would take time to get the report. The judges ordered Geetha Arts to submit in writing the reasons for the delay and the time needed to submit the report. The case is posted for hearing on January 27th.
